Sorry for the lack of update about how Mix On Campus went, though I can say I have a good reason and I’ll explain that later.
As I stated in an earlier post, my roommate and I headed up to brisbane for Mix On Campus 2007, a web developer conference for students whom can’t normally attend the big web developer conferences. The conference is sponsered by Microsoft so I expected a pretty good conference. The first thing we noticed was the event line up was different on the web then what was on the little flyer in the showbag. Just structual changes that could have made things bad if Marty work called up asking him to goto the office. Since they had a different timetable then waht was going on Marty could of missed out on Silverlight talks. Thankfully enough they didn’t ring at all, but Marty was paranoid that he’d miss their call with his phone being on silent.
The event was hosted by Nick Ellery, a guy from Microsoft who did a great job organising this event for us. He obviously put in a huge amount of time and effort getting the event speakers/promotions together. He kepted the ball rolling and hurryed the speakers along when they started going overtime.
Bryn Giles from a company called Qantm was up next and his topic was “The Future Of The Web” where he discussed his opinions on what the web will be like in the near future. He mainly talked about how the web is now, and then what changes we will like see in the future. His opinions where all based on how the data contained in this huge interweb is sorted and how changes will come to provide better sorting of this data.
After Bryn’s presentation, 2 companies presented themselves to the conference, basically outlining what their company do, whom their major clients are, and what they look for in developers. It was interesting to hear about companies whom do major projects with Australia’s biggest companies, how it all works etc.
Chris Saad from Faraday media talked about how to start up a web development company in Australia. Unfortunately right now I can’t remember much about his presentation except he was wearing the think geek wifi tshirt. I asked him after his presentation about the shirt which he happily answered my questions on whether is supports WPA or WEP encrypted networks, and yes it does. He also told me how customs got hold of the shirt and for some reason he had to pay extra to get it through.
Ross Brown from QUT was next up and presented about his research in Games Development. He showed all these cool ways his team at QUT have done to provide developers with more information about their games. From which quests are being completed, creatures being killed, to how the economy is flowing.
Now the reason why I haven’t updated since the event. I’ve been pretty busy at work
finishing up this project but also I won a brand new xbox 360 at Mix On Campus! When you register for the event you can also guess how many jelly beans are in this container they have sitting near by. They have several prizes up for grabs which include a sweater, copies of Windows Vista, the jar of jelly beans and the main prize is an xbox 360. They decided to not tell what people guess when they where calling out the winners so it played with my nerves a bit. The suspense was high and I was doubtful I would win it. Luckly enough my guess was only 30 colourful beans off and they called out my name!
I rushed out and brought about $400 worth of games and accessories so I’m going to be busy for a few months!
