Spread Firefox

Hey peeps long time no post!

If you wanted to know I’m busy working on Keytone.com a massive multimedia distribution service. Go check it out and tell me what you think.

Anyway onto the main point of this post.  According to sources, Firefox is surpassing 20% market rate which truely is an amazing feat. As most of you already know Firefox3 RC2 is out now for download and soon of course will be the actually release. That day is called “Download Day” and its goal is to set Firefox as the most downloaded software in a 24 hour period.

To find out more visit the offical website http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/

So pledge now to keep informed of Download Day!

Snedge down

Just an update if you noticed snedge.com was down. Marty was noticing that his podcasts where not downloading properly. This happened several times so he contacted our hosting company who offered to transfer our sites to another cluster to hopefully fix the problem. Unfortunately snedge seemed to be down the longest but finally its back up. Hopefully everything works fine from now on

Mix On Campus 07

Sorry for the lack of update about how Mix On Campus went, though I can say I have a good reason and I’ll explain that later.

As I stated in an earlier post, my roommate and I headed up to brisbane for Mix On Campus 2007, a web developer conference for students whom can’t normally attend the big web developer conferences. The conference is sponsered by Microsoft so I expected a pretty good conference. The first thing we noticed was the event line up was different on the web then what was on the little flyer in the showbag. Just structual changes that could have made things bad if Marty work called up asking him to goto the office. Since they had a different timetable then waht was going on Marty could of missed out on Silverlight talks. Thankfully enough they didn’t ring at all, but Marty was paranoid that he’d miss their call with his phone being on silent.

The event was hosted by Nick Ellery, a guy from Microsoft who did a great job organising this event for us. He obviously put in a huge amount of time and effort getting the event speakers/promotions together. He kepted the ball rolling and hurryed the speakers along when they started going overtime.

Bryn Giles from a company called Qantm was up next and his topic was “The Future Of The Web” where he discussed his opinions on what the web will be like in the near future. He mainly talked about how the web is now, and then what changes we will like see in the future. His opinions where all based on how the data contained in this huge interweb is sorted and how changes will come to provide better sorting of this data.

After Bryn’s presentation, 2 companies presented themselves to the conference, basically outlining what their company do, whom their major clients are, and what they look for in developers. It was interesting to hear about companies whom do major projects with Australia’s biggest companies, how it all works etc.

Chris Saad from Faraday media talked about how to start up a web development company in Australia. Unfortunately right now I can’t remember much about his presentation except he was wearing the think geek wifi tshirt. I asked him after his presentation about the shirt which he happily answered my questions on whether is supports WPA or WEP encrypted networks, and yes it does. He also told me how customs got hold of the shirt and for some reason he had to pay extra to get it through.

Ross Brown from QUT was next up and presented about his research in Games Development. He showed all these cool ways his team at QUT have done to provide developers with more information about their games. From which quests are being completed, creatures being killed, to how the economy is flowing.

Now the reason why I haven’t updated since the event. I’ve been pretty busy at work finishing up this project but also I won a brand new xbox 360 at Mix On Campus! When you register for the event you can also guess how many jelly beans are in this container they have sitting near by. They have several prizes up for grabs which include a sweater, copies of Windows Vista, the jar of jelly beans and the main prize is an xbox 360. They decided to not tell what people guess when they where calling out the winners so it played with my nerves a bit. The suspense was high and I was doubtful I would win it. Luckly enough my guess was only 30 colourful beans off and they called out my name!

I rushed out and brought about $400 worth of games and accessories so I’m going to be busy for a few months!

Mix On Campus

Well tommorow my room-mate Marty and I will be heading off to Mix On Campus, a Microsoft sponsered web development confernece hosted at QUT City Campus in Brisbane. The offical website has this following quote about the event

“The event is inspired by the sheer bulk of students and lecturers who miss out on industry events each year due to high costs, timing, lack of invitations or other factors. This always kinda irked me - why should universities, high schools and TAFEs miss out on the good stuff? Mix On Campus has been timed to happen just after exams finish in each state, so come along, chill out, forget the final few weeks of hellish study and get happy with like minded web design and web developer students from all around your city! Speakers will cover the latest web trends, web technologies and talk about career opportunities technology students can look forward to. You’ll be learning new skills, getting an insight into the tech tools of today and tomorrow and making new industry connections. We’ll also be giving out a bunch of prizes, and it’s also a great chance to come along and learn about the latest web tools from Microsoft. It doesn’t matter what institute you’re from (high school, uni and TAFE students & teachers included), you’re all welcome to join in the fun.”

All the topics look interesting, and cover a broad range of multimedia genres. From the future of the web, microsoft silverlight, and even research in games development. Plus I get a chance at winning an Xbox 360 or a copy of Windows Vista.

Even though I’ve finished my degree I technically work for QUT so I thought I’d attend this event and see where the future of the web is headed. Is it in Rich Internet Applications like I believe it is? Guess I will find out tommorow.

Flock Blogging

I just decided to test out a new (well to me anyway) browser called Flock. Its whole idea is to bring web 2.0 services such as facebookand flickr and integrate them seamlessly into your browser.

Flock is heavily based on the firefox web browser, thus is has the same benefits but also the disadvantages of everyone’s favourite browser. The interface is ok, slightly cluttered around the main navigation. The icons are unique enough to tell what they stand for, and I like the positioning of the RSS, search engine buttons near the address bar.

Blogging is relatively easily, and I am currently writing this post in the internal flock blogging section. It was pretty quick to set up and detected all my settings by adding my username and password into the application. The autosave feature has already come in handy as I’ve had to restart this laptop while writing this blog.

Overall, I can post blogs and respond to pokes in facebook quicker then before. Though there are already plenty of extensions for firefox to do the exact same things, its handy to have this package ready to interact in this web 2.0 world we live in now.

Ah damn games

Well I was hoping to release my first tutorial this weekend but unfortunately I got a hold of Team Fortress 2 and that occupied most of Saturday. I should probably write up a small review on it after work today. Though it may be a bit bias as I throughly enjoy playing it. Clocking up a few hours playing a medic and a sniper. My online nick is bloodylag and I only play on the Australian servers so if you see me on be sure to let me get an easy kill!

Tonight though I’ll ensure to finish off the first tutorial, which is just a basic reading from an xml file in flex. Though its one of the most basic elements in producing an application, its an essential component in future tutorials I’ll be releasing.

Update: My mate just linked a penny arcade comic about team fortress 2 that I found highly amusing as like I said I enjoy playing a medic.

Welcome

Hey there,

My name is Jared Fraser and I’m a web-developer. I just started up this blog to post not only my random thoughts but also interesting things I find while I’m developing and utilizing my skills in the web world.

I currently have a huge interest in developing Adobe Flex applications, which takes up alot of my time. I hope to share many of the interesting things I learn in my experiences as it is pretty hard to find decent flex tutorials (not saying there isn’t any out there, look on my blog roll for sites I like to visit).

I will also have details on what current personal projects I’m working on, with updates of features and release dates.

I think that about sums up my aims with this site. So stay tuned for what hopefully be a very entertaining and informative time!

Jared
